Vankomati (Nkomani/ Nkomazi) refers to Mbo people of the river of mountains, Komati.
Before evolving into the mountainous people of the Lebombo Mountains due to endless raids by ivory mercenaries, they were river people who lived alongside herds of elephants in tribute to these pathfinding creatures, naming the river that marked their territory after the leader of the beasts they shared the land with, Nkomati. Thus, they are called Ba nkomo ya mati — people of the river Goddess — the Giants of the escarpment.
