Vanhlave (Hlabe/ Hlabi/ Hlave/ Hlavi) refers to people of the sandbanks, Ntlhaveni.
They are esteemed Mbayi (eMbo)farmers known for trading flavourful fynbos (nhlava), salt (munyu), medicines (mimirhi), and tobacco (fole). As a tradition, they revere indigenous shrubs (swimudyani) as totems. Thus, they are called Ba ntlaba wo bava —people of the salty sand — the spice traders.
