Batonga.
Did you know that:
Vatsonga refers to coastal people of Southern Africa.
They are an indigenous people of Batwa origin, who revere the east and the sun as the source of life. They believe that the first man, Gwambe, rose from the littoral of present-day KwaZulu-Natal at the first sunrise of the Earth, marked with writings on his face and reeds upon his body. Over time, these coastal Batshwa people expanded from St. Lucia Bay, moving inland along the Lebombo range and as far north as the Sabie River in present-day Zimbabwe. As they spread, their identity evolved, giving rise to distinct groups defined not by bloodline, but by their relationship to natural elements:
- People of the ocean wind — the sun people: Baronga, Batonga, na Batshwa.
- People of the northern wind — the cosmos people: Balenge na BaN’walungu.
- People of the southern wind — the land people: Badzonga na Banhlanganu.
These are not surnames, nor are they a single tribe or people of one bloodline. They are core language identities that form the foundation of those known today as Vatsonga. All other identities are variations and evolutions of these primary expressions of Vutsonga. Thus, they are called Ba ntonga wa vutshwa — people of the bay of dawn — the easterners.
