Vankuna (Nguna) refers to people who founded Nkowankowa.

They are a warrior class of Mbai (Mbo) giants who emerged in the east from present-day Kwazulu Natal in Nghome (land of buffalo herds). Their descendants went on to play a pivotal role in the formation of ANC (Hosi Mhlaba), Frelimo (President Samora Machel), Nkowankowa township (Hosi Shilubana), and the reformed SARB (Tito Mboweni). Thus, they are called Ba suka Nguni people from the westthe Nguni revolts.
