Why is “Machel” written in a foreign format?
Long ago, the surname Maxele was changed to Machel by the Portuguese. Why? Because their language doesn’t have the “X” sound found in Xitsonga! So, they wrote it the way it sounded to the — and that’s how Maxele became Machel in official documents. 🌦️
