In Xitsonga culture, it was taboo to plant foreign fruit trees like bananas, oranges, lemons, or mangoes. People feared such trees brought misfortune, saying they would “chase away the owner of the land,” because abandoned lands were often found with the trees still standing. Over time, this belief faded and today these trees grow abundantly in our fields.
