In Xitsonga culture, it’s taboo to weave a ngula (grain basket) before harvest – just as it’s taboo to prepare ntehe (baby cradle) before a child is born. Before harvest, the maize symbolizes an unborn child; and only once it arrives can you know what size the basket should be.
