In Xitsonga culture, among Vankuna, the day of the new moon (ximusi) is a sacred rest day. It’s taboo to till the fields or cut tree roots with a hoe. The moon is believed to be “tender,” like a newborn child, and must be allowed to grow firm (tiyela). Break this rule, and tradition warns of angry winds and falling hail.
