Vandzawu (Dau/ Ndau/ Ndzau) means indigenous people.
They know the sacred sciences of alchemy, healing, and spirituality. They originate from the littoral where the first ancestor rose from the reeds. As a tradition, they wear and consume divine reeds (tindjao) to defend against invasive spirits and to exorcise them. Thus, they are called Ba dawu va rihlanga — people of the ancestor — the first people.
