The legendary Gazette (Kazet) by Mahlathini and Mahotella Queens samples:
Title: Ku Hluvukile Eka “Zete” (1983)
Artist: Obed Ngobeni & The Kurhula Sisters
Backstory:
In 1983, Obed Ngobeni & the Kurhula Sisters composed and released a praise song honouring the developmental strides of the Gazankulu Homeland, explicitly recognising Hudson Ntsanwisi’s administration for advancing social and economic inclusion within a constrained political system.
The song reflected Obed and his group’s pride in Gazankulu’s progress, particularly the active participation of women; a marker of what was then regarded as one of the most progressive and well-run homelands of its time…
Four years later, in 1987, the same political song resurfaced under the name “KaZet,” by Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens as a maskandi crossover anthem. As the country burned with political unrest, the song travelled nationally, its meaning altered, its authorship blurred as it became one of South Africa’s most recognisable hits in history.
