This is the summertime, a ceremonial period when Chiefs and Kings are invited to taste the first harvest of summer. This ritual, known as nsunge (ntsungelo), involves Royals visiting each homestead and spending the night with each clan in their domain. During this season, the community brews traditional beer called vuhimbi (vumhimbi, vumpimbi), fermented from the fruit, which is enjoyed as part of the festivities. Each clan prepares the same drink for the visiting Royals, creating a shared ceremonial experience while also providing a discreet safeguard: should a Monarch die after drinking, the source can be traced back to the clan whose homestead they had visited.
