N’wanati refers to the people of Mondlane, Makwakwa, Maluleke, Xivambu etc.
N’wamati (river goddess) is the name of the tributary river they followed, which led them to Vutsonga (east coast). As a custom, they named every eastern flowing river they encountered during their migration after it. These rivers today are known as Mwenezi, Ngwanedzi, N’wanetsi, Nwanedzi, and Nyanetsi. Thus, they are called Ba mwana mati — people of the water — the riverbank Kings.
