They are natives of the bay and renowned artisans, diviners, diplomats, traders that adorn their faces with scarred spots and tattooed symbols as a devotion to Gwambe (the creator). Thus, they are called Ba mbanga ya Mumbe — people with the mark of the deity — the branded beings.
