Understanding the Xitsonga Week

The Xitsonga week is based on six days.

This is different from the seven-day week that most people use today. The Xitsonga six days are:

1. Musumbuluko (Monday)
2. Ravumbirhi (Tuesday)
3. Ravunharu (Wednesday)
4. Ravumune (Thursday)
5. Ravuntlhanu (Friday)
6. Mugimeto (Saturday)

Sunday is not part of the original six-day Xitsonga week. It was added later. Note that the days do not have a set duration but vary with the seasons and the changing movement of the sun.

Why Six?

The idea is simple. In Xitsonga understanding, six represents completion. In mathematics, six is the first perfect number because its smaller factors add and multiply back to the whole:

• 2 × 3 = 6
• 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
• 6 ÷ 3 ÷ 2 = 1

This relationship between numbers reflects a deeper Xitsonga understanding of life’s duality. The system is not simply about counting numbers, it is about tracking how One becomes many, and how many return to One. We see duality everywhere:

• Up and down,
• Day and night,
• Life and death,
• Male and female,
• Beginning and completion etc…

The two sides are different, but together they form a complete experience. To understand day, you must experience night. To understand warmth, you must experience cold. To know the beginning, you must eventually experience the end. So, the week is the small cycle, following the sun from dawn to dusk. The year is the larger cycle, moving from warmth (summer) to cold (winter) and back to warmth.

How to Calculate the Xitsonga Week

As Xitsonga was documented and standardised within systems based on the Gregorian calendar, aspects of its own cosmological understanding of time were adapted to fit an external seven-day system. In doing so, something important was lost: the relationship between time, nature, numbers, and the cyclical understanding of existence.

So, the duality isn’t simply “two things.” It is a philosophy of being able to hold difference and unity at the same time. The two are not competing, they are two ways of measuring the same existence.
