What is Xitsonga?
Xitsonga is a multi-ethnic language of the Eastern peoples of Southern Africa, rooted in the languages we know today as XiTswa and GiTonga. Linguists classify these as Tswa-Ronga languages. The mathematics is simple: Tswa + Tonga = Ronga
Tswa carries meanings connected to the dawn, sun, and east, while Tonga is connected to the bay, coast, and eastern people.
Tswa (Dawn/East/Sunrise) + Tonga (Bay/Coast/East) = Ronga (Dawn/East/Sunrise)
From this base, the language continued to grow as other peoples entered and settled in the East. Their languages interacted with Xitsonga, adding new words, sounds, and forms. Why? Because the East was part of the wider Arab, Persian, African and Indian Ocean trading network. Language follows trade, movement and people.
However, many people who speak Xitsonga do not identify as Vatsonga. They even reject ku va Vatsonga va kha tirhisa ririmi ra Xitsonga. The confusion comes from a simple difference: language does not automatically define a person’s identity. For colonial record-keeping, many people who spoke Xitsonga were historically categorised and registered as Vatsonga, even when they identified themselves differently. Here are examples who speak Xitsonga
