The story of Sasavona by D. C. Marivate (1936)

  • The novel was first scribbled down by Daniel Cornel Marivate and then beautifully copied by hand by Mrs. Margaret Abel Hlaisi.
  • Teachers from Valdezia and Gooldville, including Teacher Fred Maboko, helped him transcribe the manuscript, making the book possible.
  • Marivate received R20 from the International Institute of African Languages and Culture in London for his work — big money in 1938!
  • Reverend A.A. Jaques saw the novel’s value and helped push for its publication, ensuring it became the first Xitsonga novel.
  • Marivate encouraged new Xitsonga writers to embrace their language and avoid Western influence in their storytelling.
